Is obesity a serious disease?

Obesity is a serious, chronic, multifactorial disease characterized by excessive accumulation of body fat and is usually associated with health problems, further compromising the individual’s condition.

Obesity is a risk factor for several diseases, among which we can mention: cancer, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Increased body weight is a worldwide trend. In the United States, for example, 35% of the population (something like 97 million people!) are overweight. Brazil, despite still being an underdeveloped country, follows the same trend, here there are already 40% of people with above average weight.

The diagnosis is made by calculating the body mass index (BMI), a worldwide method created by Adolphe Quételet, which consists of dividing the individual’s weight (in kilograms) by the square of their height (in meters). BMI less than 18.5 corresponds to people with below normal weight, between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal weight, between 25 and 29.9 represents people with above normal weight, between 30 and 30.9 the person is obese and when the BMI is greater than 40 it is considered the person with morbid obesity.

There are several causes for the onset of obesity, among which we can mention: genetic predisposition, high-fat diets, physical inactivity and endocrine disorders (hypothyroidism, for example).

If you suffer from this disease, know that there is no miracle, what we offer is clinical and surgical treatment for this comorbidity. Schedule an evaluation and invest in quality of life.
